“Make the Economy Scream”: 50th Anniversary of US 9/11/1973 Coup of Allende (9/18/23) (Part 1/2)

“Make the Economy Scream”: Tools of US Foreign Policy on the 50th Anniversary of US 9/11/1973 Coup of Allende & Chilean Democracy Current president, 36-year-old Gabriel Boric of the left-wing Approve Dignity coalition was sworn in as the youngest President in Chilean history on March 11 2022. Some 14 out of 24 ministers in Boric’s cabinet are women. Seven of the cabinet members are in their 30s, and the average age is 42. Chile is one of the most unequal countries in Latin America. One percent of the country’s population owns about a quarter of its wealth. During his election campaign, Boric promised to introduce radical reforms to the current free-market economic model and bring the citizens’ demands raised during the 2019 social outbreak to the halls of government. During his victory speech in December 2021, Boric once again vowed to bury neoliberalism. “If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it would also be its grave,” he said. He also ratified his commitment to reducing the glaring disparities in the country by increasing spending on public services. “We no longer will permit the poor to keep paying the price of Chile’s inequality,” he added. However, the primary focus of the show tonight is to document how all major sectors of the Chilean political and economic system were penetrated by the CIA under the direction of Henry Kissinger, Everything from the funding monies of influence into the Christian Democratic party and other alternatives to Allende’s Popular Unity Party, monies into the police and military, into radio and print media. Monies that sought to control the labor unions and labor movement, through the AFL CIO and CIA collaboration and the 1972 Trucker’s strike all funded by clandestine US CIA government monies; Documents many of them recently declassified explains how our foreign policy was to make sure it was impossible for Allende to govern and to make the economy scream by any and all means necessary. To understand US intervention and the subversion of autonomous civil and military structures of countries throughout the world is to take a giant step in understanding US foreign policy and its complete disregard for international law and basic ethics to respect the autonomy of other nations. Chile provides the prototypical example that we deconstruct tonight. [00:01:55] A pursuit where we seek to separate fact from fiction and where we acknowledge uncertainty

[00:02:01] where we seek to deconstruct deceit by identifying where unproven allegations are presented as fact

[00:02:07] through repetition and the absence of evidence. And where uncertainties are approached from a humble critical thinking

[00:02:14] perspective because our interest is in deconstructing deceit and depression not enabling it.

[00:02:20] Last week was 9-11, 20, 23. And it was our membership drive.

[00:02:26] I just wanted to thank all the people that called in during the show last week to support

[00:02:31] co-op radio and bringing light into darkness. Those people included less Jeff,

[00:02:37] wordy, Kenneth, Chris, Richard, Gerhard, Mark, David, Allen, Roger, Doug and apparently

[00:02:47] some others that we're trying to call in. Thank you also much, some of the comments

[00:02:52] that you made were just really supportive. Among my favorites were one that said when

[00:02:57] truth is offensive, listen, my fascination with Pedro's show is that it isn't intended

[00:03:04] to entertain us but is intended to deliver important facts that listeners cannot find anywhere else.

[00:03:10] Another said I would like to encourage all of the other piece activists in Austin

[00:03:15] to help support Pedro's show. Another was his show is willing to call State Department

[00:03:21] Defense Department and corporate quote unquote facts, the fantasies and lies they actually

[00:03:27] are. Another is Pedro's show makes co-op a real alternative to mainstream media.

[00:03:33] His show prep is always great and guess always are interesting presenting alternative

[00:03:39] viewpoints. And lastly, love Pedro's show very informative makes me think I don't

[00:03:45] always agree but I do have points to discuss with friends. Thank you all for those comments

[00:03:50] and support can't tell you how much I appreciate it. It is a great honor being a volunteer

[00:03:57] and programmer at Co-op radio for the last 20 years and to have such a loyal following.

[00:04:02] Enjoy the show and just as aside now, last week I was really ill and was unable to make

[00:04:09] it to the studio. So the intent was to do a 911 show which we're doing tonight and you'll

[00:04:15] be hearing live on 918 2023. However, the 911 show will not focus on the horrific bombings

[00:04:25] of our buildings in New York City in Washington DC on 911 2001 but instead we'll focus

[00:04:34] on the circumstances of a different 911 that led to the coup and death on 911 1973 of Salvador

[00:04:44] Allende, the newly democratically elected president of Chile in the disappearance torture

[00:04:51] and murder of thousands of Chileans under the US endorsed coup government of general Augusto

[00:04:59] Pinochet regime that followed. We focus our attention to this subject in history because

[00:05:06] it reveals the inner locking and overlapping nature of corporate and government involvement

[00:05:13] when it comes to overthrowing or destabilizing governments that do not promote the type

[00:05:20] of profit hearing and rates of return on investment that our business community expects

[00:05:26] and instead reveals our foreign policy for one that enables United States corporations

[00:05:33] and other multinational corporations to dominate key sectors of other nation's national economies

[00:05:40] often and almost always at the cost of the majority populations economic interests in those countries.

[00:05:48] Therefore tonight's show seeks to document how as a matter of foreign policy intervention our CIA

[00:05:58] penetrated virtually every sector of Chilean livelihood throughout their economy and society

[00:06:05] from labor to media to political parties basically every sector was infiltrated by hundreds of thousands

[00:06:13] of dollars in other forms of influence in order to promote not Chilean interests but US investment interests.

[00:06:20] But first we wanted to share a couple of video audio tracks as well as to bring you up to date with the current

[00:06:30] Chilean government and its policies by reviewing a couple of articles that were recently published.

[00:06:37] I'll connect you to the 50th anniversary of the Chilean coup of Salvador, Yende which again occurred back on 911 1973.

[00:06:49] This first video audio clip is about three minutes long and is from Al Jazeera reporting on the events that were occurring in Chile on 911, 2023.

[00:07:02] The 50th anniversary of the Al Jende coup featuring many families that still don't know where their disappeared relatives are 50 years later.

[00:07:11] This is a short video audio of a protest just five or six days ago in Santiago, Chile on the 50th anniversary of the coup that took the life of Salvador,

[00:07:26] back in 1973 on 911. It was produced by Al Jazeera.

[00:07:56] But on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Chile's 1973 military coup, thousands continued marching to the cemetery,

[00:08:07] many carrying photos of victims of the former military dictatorship under General Agustopinochet.

[00:08:14] Juan Paolo Latellier's father was one of them.

[00:08:17] This is the day of the day of human rights. They were we remember what happened 50 years ago.

[00:08:25] But the march was interrupted repeatedly.

[00:08:28] The tear gas is getting much stronger here. Glass bottles and Molotov cocktails are being thrown back there, but not at the police,

[00:08:36] but rather at some members of the socialist and communist parties that made up part of President Ayendus government 50 years ago,

[00:08:45] but also the new government of Gabriel Bordic, President Gabriel Bordic, when they are now calling traitor.

[00:08:52] Inside the cemetery itself, right police brought in water canentrucks and tear gas vans to chill stem and straightels,

[00:08:59] even around the tune of former President Ayendus.

[00:09:04] At the Museum of Memory, a more emotional scene, as a survivor of one of the dictatorship's interrogation and torture centers,

[00:09:13] embraced Brazilian Avandote Jada, the photographer who had photographed him in 1973 in a dungeon when he was 15 years old.

[00:09:23] Two weeks ago, I saw this photo in a poster and contacted the Brazilian embassy because I am a survivor of the National Stadium incident.

[00:09:33] And that photo is also my brother's year-old who was 24 years old and he was never seen again.

[00:09:40] The commemoration of the overthrow of the world's first democratic-elected socialist president on September 11, 1973 is not over.

[00:09:50] But after half a century, it's a date that continues to unleash pain and confrontations.

[00:09:57] You see a newman Al-Jazeera Santiago.

[00:10:20] The first part to make reforms within the Chilean economy that benefited the poor and majority populations of Chile.

[00:10:29] However, that was dashed by the coup and followed by Pinotche's military rule that lasted almost 17 years,

[00:10:37] which saw thousands killed, tortured, enforced into exile, and whose economic policies were shaped by US interests that promoted neoliberalism.

[00:10:49] It's awful ironic that in 2022 in March, President Boerch was elected whose history included being a leader in the student protests that started in 2019,

[00:11:02] initially over an increase in subway fares but which turned into a much larger and broader movement with a long list of demands that largely focused on inequality.

[00:11:13] So I wanted to highlight this article that reviews and documents a lot of the policies that the current president has been engineering.

[00:11:23] This particular article is entitled New President Gabriel Boerch says Chile will be neoliberalism's grave.

[00:11:32] It's a March 16th PeopleSworld.org 2022 article by Tanya Wattha.

[00:11:38] So the article details that the president, the current president Gabriel Boerch, BORIC, is a spelling actually.

[00:11:46] He's a member of the left wing approved dignity coalition and was sworn as President of Chile on March 11th 2022.

[00:11:55] He's also just 36 years of age and became the youngest president in the country's history after winning the presidential runoff in December of 2021.

[00:12:07] Following his inauguration, he also brought to power a ministerial cabinet that was made up of a majority of women who also took office for the next four year term of Boerch.

[00:12:21] With brought boards through the public attention for many was his participation in the October 2019 social uprising against decades of neoliberal policies and deep rooted social inequality is in Chile.

[00:12:37] And as many look at his election marking the beginning of a new era for social justice in Chile.

[00:12:45] In his first speech as president, he highlighted the importance of popular participation in the process of change to face the challenges ahead.

[00:12:55] From a policy perspective, the article goes on to indicate that the new president would work to improve the public education and health sectors.

[00:13:05] He will pay special attention to the fight against COVID-19 and continue the successful vaccination strategy.

[00:13:13] He also said that his administration would strive to consolidate and recover the economy but with sustainable growth and the redistribution of wealth produced by Chileans.

[00:13:26] He promised to confront crime and insecurity by combating social inequality and reforming the police.

[00:13:34] With respect to his foreign policy, President Boerch said his administration would not support it itself to any power.

[00:13:43] He said he would not support the political economy at the international level without ever subordinating ourselves to any power and always safeguarding coordination in cooperation among people.

[00:14:27] He said he would not support the political economy and reforming under former president, Pinyara's government and vowed that it would never happen again.

[00:14:35] The article goes on to inform us that Chile is one of the most unequal countries in Latin America.

[00:14:41] The country's population owns about a quarter of its wealth during his election campaign.

[00:14:47] He also said he also ratified his commitment to the economic model and bring the citizens demands raised during the 2019 social outbreak to the halls of government.

[00:15:01] During his victory speech in December of 2021, Boerch once again vowed to bury neoliberalism.

[00:15:09] Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism. It would also be its grave end quote he said. He also ratified his commitment to reducing the glaring disparities in the country by increasing spending on public services.

[00:15:24] We no longer will permit the poor to keep paying the price of Chile's inequality end quote he said.

[00:15:31] The country's current constitution was adopted under Pinochet's dictatorship in his widely seen as sidelines in the poor and working classes.

[00:15:42] He is now in the process of being redrapted by the constitutional convention and achievement of the 2019 mass protests.

[00:15:51] Boerch's government has the enormous responsibility of overseeing the conclusion of the drafting of the new constitution,

[00:16:00] the organization of an exit, plebiscite and the implementation of the new constitution. Meanwhile, the approved dignity alliance plans to strengthen the state in order to address citizens demands.

[00:16:15] The alliance has pledged to increase wages and pensions improve public education in healthcare and introduce progressive taxes on corporations and wealthy individuals to pay for social reforms.

[00:16:29] In January 2022, the announcement of his cabinet received widespread national and international recognition.

[00:16:38] His cabinet for the first time in the country's history replaced middle-aged male elites with young women and former student leaders.

[00:16:48] Some 14 out of 24 ministers in Borch's cabinet are women.

[00:16:54] Seven of the cabinet members are in their 30s. Their average age is 42.

[00:17:00] Among the newly appointed ministers is communist party legislator Camilla Vallaejo, who participated in student protests alongside Borch in 2011 to 2012.

[00:17:13] She serves as the government's spokesperson.

[00:17:17] Congressman George E. Jackson of Borch's own broad front coalition and other of his companions in the student struggle for improved education is Secretary General of the presidency.

[00:17:31] His key ascaches a prominent doctor in head of the National Medical Association is the head of the Interior Ministry.

[00:17:38] Maya Fernandes, the granddaughter of Salvador A. N. Day, is Borch's defense minister.

[00:17:45] Last week, meaning back in March 7th of 2022 Borch appointed Lieutenant Colonel Cecilia Navadro Luguei of the National Police Force that Caterbin Edoz as aide the camp to the presidency making her the first women to assume the position.

[00:18:05] Borch had announced in his victory speech that women who made a significant contribution to his victory would be quote unquote protagonist in his government, which will quote leave behind once and for all the patriarchal inheritance of our society and quote.

[00:18:23] I wanted to close out this half of the show with the other video that we had prepared for you tonight on Chile and the 50th anniversary of the coup in assassination of Salvador A. N. Day.

[00:18:37] This next audio video is from Telasore and it's also dated just last week 911 to 2023.

[00:18:46] It features news correspondent Alejandro Herc, that's K.I.R.K.

[00:18:52] And listen as he describes a number of issues, but also how significant parts of the Chilean population, some 25% do not believe that Pena Shea was a human rights violator.

[00:19:07] It's just interesting how powerful propaganda can be stretching over decades and why the control of information in countries, as we will see later, play such a huge part in shaping these ideas.

[00:19:22] And as we have been reported, Chile commemorates the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état that lasted the president Salvador A. N. Day.

[00:19:29] Now we will live with our correspondent Alejandro Kirch who brings us more details. Be welcome Alejandro, how are you?

[00:19:36] I'm fine. Thank you. Greetings. I'm in front of a Supreme Court of Chile where marking the 50th anniversary of the coup, a group of relatives of missing people during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet introduced a little accusation.

[00:19:55] The man against every kissing or being responsible the last person alive responsible for the decision taken on September 1970 to prevent Salvador A. N. Day to become president and then to conspire in order to execute a coup that took place in September 1973.

[00:20:22] This is pressure, okay, should also be called here with that was Pablo, a full bit agenda, the grand son of president agenda supporting this accusation which is based on documents recently declassified by this state department.

[00:20:39] It's not just marking the anniversary proper but there has been activities all over the past week and lots of seminars and countries, meetings, ceremonies, rendering owner to those fallen missing persons who were killed kidnapped and killed and also there has been a lot of controversy.

[00:21:05] Today the La Moneda Palas, which is the presidential palace here, president Gabriel Bordic, had a great gathering of the gathering with guests coming from several countries for example the president of Mexico and the Manuel Lopez from the world, the president of Bolivia, Luis Sarce and many others who have been again in commemorating this issue which was at the time and even still now.

[00:21:34] The event of worldwide repercussions, the daughter of Salvador A. N. Day's conference morning reminding everybody that all over the world there are hospitals, schools, streets, squares, libraries, men after Salvador A. N. Day.

[00:21:52] I must say much more than what we have here in his own country where the opinion is still divided or who was responsible for the coup and whether or not the no check committed widespread human rights violation genocide has been constantly proved all over again in international stances and also here.

[00:22:18] But people are still looking for justice. Together with the lawyer human rights lawyer, who will be here is going to introduce the accusation and public opinion of where the association of relatives of missing persons who are still seeking justice got 15 years after their loved ones were kidnapped and tortured and killed by the dictatorship but whose bodies are not being found so they are legal to regard it as kidnapped.

[00:22:47] People are not dead. All they are asking is the right to have their bodies in order to bury them and know whatever happened to them.

[00:23:01] The accusation also with public public and the judge is also against the army and armed forces who are responsible for these human rights violations who have the information that never have released their help in finding out the truth.

[00:23:17] So these commemorations are marked in somehow because of the lack of information or the lack of justice and these people are still suffering the enormous tragedy of having someone kidnapped and missing 50 years.

[00:23:34] The minister of defense who is also a granddaughter of some other agenda and President Borech have said recently in interviews that they believe that they are forced to sound.

[00:23:44] We already have given all the information they have and they are constitutional bodies that respect democracy and human rights.

[00:23:52] But there are many doubts about that and also on the other hand the extreme right and the right wing was the entire political spectrum who are denying the inconstant to shellastic of that coup and the violation degeneracy that took place.

[00:24:08] The country's deeply divided must add that according to polls one in four Chileans believed that the responsible for the coup was the government of South other agenda and the coalition would be that popular.

[00:24:22] But in the memory of the people, the Chilean people is still alive not only the people of South other agenda but also the improvements to the economy to their lives that they experimented in the short three years in which again the health health state and where he was overthrown from by orders from the United States.

[00:24:46] Yeah we think this report from Chile, from our collaborator and our correspondent Alejandro Gilgile Alejandro.

[00:24:54] We know this is a very difficult day for Chile and for Latin America and also we want to thank you extra for this report and we hope you can join us in other commissions.

[00:25:06] I'm looking forward to that. Okay we need to take a quick pause for the cause will be right back to bringing light into darkness on 91.7 k o o p horns boston don't touch that dial.
